Independent Living

Independent living offers a variety of choices appropriate for individuals whose physical and cognitive health allows them to continue living on their own, with no or very limited assistance. Individuals considering this type of housing should generally be able to walk or propel themselves if a mobility aid is used, be able to self-transfer, bathe, dress, prepare meals, take medication without assistance and be independent in their personal care. Some facilities may have a dining room where meals are available, offer housekeeping and laundry service as a convenience, organized social and leisure activities and a variety of on-site amenities including a library, beauty salon/barber shop, pool, gardens, movie theatre or fitness facility.

Examples of independent living include:

  • Subsidized housing is supported by the federal or state government and residents usually pay 30 - 40 percent of their income toward the rent or a reduced rent based on other federal or state programs. Quite often, social service staff is available on site and limited social activities may be available.
  • Non-subsidized housing costs vary depending primarily on services offered, amenities and size of apartments and are paid for by the individual from their own resources. A wider selection of amenities is usually available.
  • Age-designated for purchase communities offer individuals the option of purchasing a home in a community where residents are age 55 and older. These communities are for active adults and offer a wide variety of on-site amenities. Homes are purchased by the individual or couple from their own resources.

To help older adults and caregivers find services, ARC has developed an extensive database of aging services providers in the Atlanta region.

Those looking for services can call AgeWise Connection at 404.463.3333 to speak to a certified information and referral specialist or search the database online.
